Dr.
Frankel has acquired over twenty years of experience in
the field of "Addictions Treatment", in-patient
as well as out-patient models. His area of expertise includes
individual, group and family counseling for individuals
diagnosed with addictive disorders. Due to his rich ethnic
background (Polish/Jewish) and the ability to speak the
Polish language, Roman remains sensitive to the cultural
issues affecting a dysfunctional family. Dr. Frankel has
also been recognized as a dynamic presenter, knowledgeably
addressing the issues related to cocaine (crack) addiction,
alcoholism, family issues and gambling addiction. The focus
of his background experience is working with the "difficult/resistive"
patient.
Dr.
Frankel was awarded a Doctoral Degree in Health and Human
Services by Columbia Commonwealth University. He received his
B.S. in Guidance and Counseling from Wayne State University
and completed much of his graduate work in marital and family
counseling. He is also a graduate of the Detroit Institute
of Addiction Research and Training, and participant of numerous
workshops dealing with addictive disorders. Dr. Frankel
is one of few individuals in the state who has been granted
the Certified Addictions Counselor (C.A.C. II) certificate
as well as the Clinical Certified Supervisor (CCS) certificate
by the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals
and the International Certification Consortium/Alcohol and
Other Drug Abuse, Inc. He is further Certified Nationally
as an Addictions Counselor (NCAC II) by the National Association
of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors. He is also registered
by the State of Michigan as a Practicing Social Worker.
Dr. Frankel is also certified as the Employee Assistance
Professional (CEAP) by the Employee Assistance Certification
Commission and a Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor
(CCGC) by the American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Certification
Board. Most recently, the American Academy for the Certification
of Brain Injury Specialists granted Dr. Frankel a Certified
Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) certificate.
His
prior employment with "Insight at Colombiere"
provided him with an opportunity to expand his expertise.
During his three years with Insight, Roman fulfilled the
role of therapist-expert regarding Cocaine addiction. He
was also instrumental in the agency's J.C.A.H. accreditation
as the policies and procedures coordinator. The previous
six years Dr. Frankel was employed by Metro East Drug Treatment
corporation, working with indigent clientele seeking assistance
for multiple concerns including: addiction treatment, medical
assistance and vocational rehabilitation.
For
the past twelve years, he has been at the leading edge in
developing treatment services for individuals presenting
the multi diagnosis of addiction, traumatic brain injury
and psychiatric disorders. Among his accomplishments is
the development of the first group home for this population,
as well as the first in-patient hospital unit for the multi-diagnosed.
Additionally,
Dr. Frankel is President and Executive Director of New Start
Inc., an organization which provides consultation, training,
and networking services for addictions treatment facilities
as well as treatment and referral services for individuals
diagnosed with addictive disorders. Dr. Frankel is also
the owner and President of “The Healing Place, Ltd., a residential
community based program for multi-diagnosed patients. This
latest endeavor is a project fulfilling his life-long dream.
Dr.
Frankel was also the President of RAPP Seminars, Inc. which
stands for Rehabilitation, Addiction, Psychiatry, Psychology
and was an information resource for professionals providing
treatment and other services for traumatically brain injured
(TBI) and addictive individuals. This company dedicated
its efforts to offering training and education on issues
pertaining to treatment of this clinically challenging population.
Dr. Frankel coordinated an impressive group of presenters
from the medical and psychological fields in developing
meaningful and intellectually demanding seminars.
He
is past President of (MAADAC), Michigan Association of Alcoholism
and Drug Abuse Counselors (fifteen-year member) and has
served on various board positions for the (NAADAC) National
Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors as well
as (EAPA) Employee Assistance Professional Association,
once again showing his commitment to the human services
field. Recently Dr. Frankel completed his term as the Regional
Vice-President of NAADAC serving six states in the Mid-Central
Region. He is also a member of numerous other civic and
professional organizations.
Dr.
Frankel was appointed to the Michigan Advisory Certification
Board for Addiction Professionals (MACBAP) January, 1995
for a three year term by the Michigan Department of Public
Health/Center for Substance Abuse Services (MDPH/CSAS) and
currently serves on the board of the newly incorporated
Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals.
His
training capabilities expanded over the past few years to
include areas of Gang Activity in our Communities, Workplace
and Community Violence, Mentally Ill in the Workplace and
extensive training on topics of Ethnic/Cultural/Racial as
well as gender, age etc. etc., Diversity. His work in training
the UAW-EAP’s and Civil Rights representatives earned him
a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and engaging
facilitators. Dr. Frankel is actively sought by many professional
associations, community groups and other organizations to
share his wealth of knowledge. He is well known for his
enthusiasm and passion.
